We started an Instagram account to document our book placing adventures back in March of 2023, inspired by the most recent book banning in Duval County. We believe free access to literature is a right and that the decision as to which books are welcome in their homes is up to families, not policy makers. Rebel Readers Literary Club exists as an effort to provide multicultural and challenged/banned books to the community for free via Little Free Libraries. So far, we have placed thousands of books throughout little libraries in Duval.
Our belief that access to literature is a right is what drove us to create an our organization. Rebel Readers exists to provide free access to literature for students in grades K-12 and their parents by contributing multicultural and historically challenged literature to Free Little Libraries throughout NE Florida and beyond. Through our club’s initiative providing challenged and banned books, we encourage the community to get curious, seek out information for themselves, and discover books they enjoy to foster literacy.
We are Kati Johnston and Casey Truglio. Between us we have experience as students, educators, advocates, caregivers, as well as in business. We all have a passion for reading and literacy and believe everyone should have access to diverse literature. Spreading our love for reading while uplifting multicultural and banned/challenged literature is the driving force behind the work we do at Rebel Readers.
